WHAT ARE BRAIN HEMORRHAGES?

When there is a bleeding inside the skull, it is called Brain Hemorrhage or Intracranial Hemorrhage.

The types of brain hemorrhage are:

  • Intracerebral bleeds
  • Subrachnoid bleeds
  • Epidural bleeds
  • Subdural bleeds

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

Symptoms include

  • Sudden Headache

  • Changes in Vision

  • Numbness or Weakness

  • Speech difficulty

  • Dizziness

  • Loss of balance or coordination

DIAGNOSIS

imaging tests are used to confirm diagnosis for Brain Haemorrhages

  • CT – Scan (Computed Tomography)
  • MRI – Magnetic Resonance Imaging
  • DSA – Digital Subtraction Angiography Is performed if there is a suspicion that there is a blood vessel problem, such a bulge i.e. an aneurysm. 

 

TREATMENT OPTIONS

Bleeding that are small don’t need surgical intervention, they can watched.

Neurological examination and repeated CT scans could be required to monitor.

Incase the bleeding is large, the treatment offered is

  • Surgical Drainage
    A small hole, burr hole is made in the skull and the blood it drained out, this option of treatment is when the bleeding is in a limited area and isn’t clotting in the skull.
  • Crainiotomy
    When the bleeding is large, then a section of the skull could be removed to access the area of bleed to remove the blood.
